How Do You Collect Lottery Winnings in Rhode Island?

The table below highlights the different processes of claiming your prizes in Rhode Island.

Within 60 days of becoming eligible for the prize, Mega Millions and Powerball jackpot winners can choose between receiving their winnings in cash or as an annuity. The prize will be paid out in 30 graduated annual payments under the annuity.

The top prize in Lucky for Life, which is $1,000 each day for life, and the second prize, which is $25,000 per year for life, can either be collected over a minimum of 20 years or in one lump amount.

All prizes must be claimed within 1 year of the drawing date.

  • Holders of winning tickets must provide the following documents or information to claim a Rhode Island Lottery award via mail:

Why is the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpot's cash value lower than its annuity value?
The value of the cash invested over a 30-year period in securities is the annuity amount.
When purchasing a Powerball or Mega Millions ticket, do players have to decide between the cash and the annuity option?
No. Choosing between a cash reward and an annuity payment must be done within 60 days of winning the prize. Cash payments are made all at once. After the initial payment, annuity payments are spread out over 29 years.
